Halle Berry Biography:
Halle was born to Jerome
and Judith Berry in
1968.
The second daughter
of an interracial couple,
Halle and her older
sister Heidi, lived
their early childhood
years living in an inner-city
neighborhood. At the
age of 4 Halle's abusive
father, Jerome Berry,
left the family and
Halle was raised almost
totally by her mother.
Judith, a psychiatric
nurse, some time later,
moved Halle and her
sister, Heidi, to the
predominantly white
Cleveland suburb of
Bedford.
Life was rough for Halle
at an early age, because
she attended a nearly
all-white public school.
Facing the harshness
of discrimination, made
her stronger and more
determined to rise above
it all. In high school,
Halle was very active
in school activities.
She was newspaper editor,
class president, member
of the honor society,
varsity cheerleader,
and prom queen.
In her community, Halle
was Miss Ohio, Miss
Teen All-American, and
in 1986, first runner-up
in the Miss USA pageant.
She was the first African
American to represent
the U.S. in the Miss
World competition in
London. Halle attended
Cleveland's Cuyahoga
Community College, where
she studied broadcast
journalism. Halle did
not pursue her studies
in a news reporting
career, rather she devoted
her time to a career
in entertainment. She
first moved to Chicago,
then New York City,
where she found work
as a catalog model.
